The 7th instalment in Silent Force, DESTINY REVEALED is the artist’s most personal expression to date. Conceived at a time marked by the successive loss of both parents, this mixed-media piece breaks with the past, the stone fashioned and caressed until it unwittingly revealed a phantom face, emerging between raised arms clasping seamlessly overhead. From an emblematic, yet truncated, symbolic egg-shaped base, a finely chiselled funnel bursts upwards. By espousing adroitly the bronze component, which twists eloquently into the profile of an infinity sign, the stone stands alone in the created void above, hinting at a profile. As abstract as the monolithic Moai of Easter Island, Brancusi’s nonrepresentational portraits, Lipchitz’s cubic figures or the sublimated features of ceremonial headdresses typical of many indigenous cultures across the globe, the evocation of a face, as a universally recognized symbol of humanity, marks the artist’s coming of age as a separate individual. By taking away the excess to reveal the form within, the labour-intensive subtractive process of carving the malleable stone both hides and highlights the bronze’s structural integrity. The improbable union of the pink-hued limestone with the bronze’s raw polish alludes to a complex personal, psychological and spiritual dimension. Indeed, thanks to a masterful juxtaposition, the masculine permanence of bronze, both integrated and contrasted to the delicate limestone, created an unexpected figurative illusion, absent in the artist’s work to date. With DESTINY REVEALED the artist waves at a past fading into the distance, emerging whole as his own entity, free from his former anchor, his existence no longer woven in the interstice between the opposing forces of nature and culture.
